MUST-READS:

From our podcast: Stories Across South America: Episode 7 A Journey to Remember: The Galapagos Islands

When our travelers begin planning a trip to the Galapagos Islands, one of the first questions that often comes up is: Do I need to be an adventure traveler to enjoy them? The good news: you don’t. The Galápagos are as much about slowing down, watching a playful sea lion swim beside you, or quietly observing marine iguanas sunbathing on volcanic rocks, as they are about snorkeling or hiking.

In our latest episode of Stories Across South America, I (Maria) sat down with Camila Natalia, our brilliant trip planner and product manager at Across South America. If you’ve ever traveled with us, you’ve already felt her touch — the details that just “flow” when you’re on one of our journeys. Camila had just returned from a boutique Galápagos cruise aboard the Integrity Yacht, and she shared both her awe and her insights.

Her stories are vivid: crossing a road blocked by iguanas minutes after landing, snorkeling with giant sea turtles off Isabela Island, and realizing that marine iguanas really do swim like little Godzillas. But beyond the magic, Camila helps answer the practical side of how to plan a trip to the Galápagos Islands — from choosing between land- or cruise-based stays to understanding seasons and wildlife patterns.

As Camila shared on the podcast:

“The minute I dove into the water, oh my gosh, it was the most beautiful experience of my life.”

In this post, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know when planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands:

  • Camila’s first impressions, from iguanas crossing the road to champagne under the stars.
  • What it’s really like onboard a boutique yacht versus staying in a hotel.
  • The best times to visit depending on wildlife, weather, and your preferences.
  • The unforgettable wildlife encounters — sea turtles, playful sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and more.
  • Local insights on food, guides, and how to slow down and connect with nature.

So grab a cup of Coffee (or maybe a glass of your favorite wine! ) and let’s travel together for a while.

Whether the Galápagos have been on your radar for years or you’re just beginning to dream about them, this post (and the episode) will help you shape a journey that feels immersive, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

First Impressions: Arrival in the Galápagos

Camila’s adventure began in a way that perfectly sets the tone for any Galápagos trip. She had barely landed when her transport was forced to stop on the road — not because of traffic, but because a family of marine iguanas was making their way across.

“I had only been there 15 minutes,” she laughed, “and already I felt like I was in another world.”

That moment was more than a fun travel story; it was a glimpse into what makes this archipelago different. Here, humans adjust to the rhythms of animals, not the other way around.

This first encounter reminds us why the islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and why strict conservation rules exist. Wildlife is not only abundant but also unbothered by human presence. In the Galápagos, you quickly realize you are just a guest in their world — a feeling that sets the tone for every day that follows

Life Onboard a Boutique Yacht

Camila sailed aboard the Integrity Yacht, a boutique vessel with space for only 18 travelers. For her, the experience was transformative. Waking up each morning to a new island outside her window felt surreal, and she spoke about how this rhythm allowed her to immerse herself fully without ever feeling rushed.

Traveling this way also gave her access to remote islands and uninhabited places that most day tours from hotels simply cannot reach. Privacy and personal service were part of the rhythm too. “When you wake up, you’re already there,” she explained, emphasizing how valuable that is when your time is limited. Instead of losing hours each day on long boat rides, she gained them back in quiet moments watching dolphins from the deck or chatting with her guide over breakfast.

By contrast, basing yourself in hotels in towns like Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) or Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal Island) can work well if you prefer to stay on land. But excursions from there are mostly long day trips, with much time spent commuting. For Camila, the yacht offered not just efficiency but intimacy — a smaller group, shared experiences, and a deeper connection to the islands.

Snorkeling Highlights: Sea Turtles, Marine Iguanas, and More

When asked about her favorite memory, Camila didn’t hesitate. It was a day of snorkeling off Isabela Island, in waters so clear they seemed unreal. She described sliding into the sea and immediately being surrounded by giant sea turtles, some so large she couldn’t believe her eyes. Nearby, marine iguanas swam gracefully, their movements quirky and unexpected — just as she had read, they really did look like miniature Godzillas under water.

Then came the playful sea lions, circling her as if inviting her into their game, darting and turning in a way that made her laugh into her snorkel mask. Around her, schools of colorful fish glimmered like confetti in the sunlight.

It was the best snorkeling experience of my life,” she told me, still in awe. “Like living inside a National Geographic documentary.”

That one moment captured everything the Galápagos stand for: wildlife encounters that are intimate, surprising, and deeply moving, yet always at a respectful, safe distance.

Wildlife Moments that Feel Like National Geographic

Beyond snorkeling, Camila shared countless other moments that felt almost unreal. She recalled seeing blue-footed boobies nesting along cliffs, spotting giant tortoises in their natural habitat, and even learning after the fact that hammerhead sharks had been swimming just a few meters beneath her — captured in the videos of fellow travelers. “Thank goodness I didn’t know at the time,” she laughed.

Each island offers something different, and the variety of unique wildlife is astonishing. From the tiny Galápagos penguins darting through the water to manta rays gliding beneath the surface, every day brings new encounters. Strict regulations by the Galápagos National Park ensure that visitors always observe these creatures responsibly, maintaining the fragile balance of their natural habitat..

Cruise vs. Hotel: Choosing the Best Way to Explore

One of the big choices in planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands is whether to explore by staying in a hotel on one of the main islands or by joining a multi-day cruise. Camila explained that around 85% of visitors choose hotels, typically in places like Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal, and then take day tours to nearby islands. While this option works for some, it also means spending a lot of time commuting back and forth, often at the expense of deeper exploration.

By contrast, a small ship or yacht like the Integrity allows you to move while you sleep, waking up already at the next visitor site. This not only saves valuable hours but also opens doors to places unreachable on day trips — pristine islands where few ever set foot. The atmosphere is different too: with fewer people on board, you form connections with guides and fellow travelers, creating a shared journey that feels both personal and special. For many with little time, it’s simply the best way to truly experience the Galápagos.

Seasons, Weather, and When to Visit Galapagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands are a year-round destination, but Camila reminded me that the experience changes depending on the season. From December to May, the wet season brings warm air, calm seas, and inviting water temperatures. This is a wonderful time for swimming and snorkeling, with crystal-clear conditions and abundant marine life.

From June to November, the dry season arrives with the influence of the Humboldt Current, cooling the waters and enriching them with nutrients. This is when you’re more likely to see larger marine species — think manta rays, hammerhead sharks, and even playful Galápagos penguins. The weather may be cooler and the seas choppier, but the wildlife activity can be astounding.

Camila stressed that there is no single “best time of year.” Instead, the right time depends on your personal preference — whether you prioritize warmer swimming conditions or the thrill of richer marine life encounters.

Dining and Sharing Stories at Sea

Food, as Camila pointed out, is part of the adventure. Onboard the Integrity, she enjoyed meals that felt more like dining in a fine restaurant than being on a boat. Fresh fish, tropical fruits, and Ecuadorian specialties were beautifully prepared and served with care.

But it wasn’t just about the food. Meals became a time to connect. She described evenings when passengers gathered around a table, sharing wildlife photos and videos, laughing over stories from the day, and even toasting with champagne as they crossed the equator. One night, sitting on the deck under the stars, she realized how powerful these shared moments were — as much a part of the journey as seeing sea turtles or blue-footed boobies.

On land, towns like Puerto Ayora and Puerto Villamil also offer opportunities to taste local flavors, from casual ceviche stands to elegant restaurants. Food here is a way to connect to both place and people.

Final Reflections: Why the Galápagos Stay With You

Camila summed it up in a way that still lingers with me:

“You are a guest in their world.”

Traveling here isn’t just about sights or activities. It’s about entering a fragile ecosystem where conservation comes first and where every encounter reminds you of your place in the web of life. That perspective shift is what makes the Galápagos not just a trip, but an unforgettable experience that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.

FAQ About Planning a trip to Galapagos Islands

How many days do you need to visit the Galápagos Islands?

5 to 8 days is the ideal amount of time to visit the Galápagos Islands, as this allows you to explore several main islands, enjoy both land excursions and snorkeling, and truly experience the unique wildlife and landscapes without feeling rushed; while shorter 4-day trips are possible, a week-long stay (often on a small-ship cruise) is generally considered the best way to make the journey immersive and worthwhile

What is the best month to go to the Galápagos Islands?

The Galápagos Islands are a year-round destination, but the best month really depends on what you want to experience: from December to May the warm, wet season brings calmer seas, sunny skies, and excellent snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, while June to November (the cool, dry season) offers richer marine life thanks to the Humboldt Current, with highlights like manta rays, penguins, and schooling hammerhead sharks — so the “best” time is more about your personal preference for warmer water versus peak wildlife activity

Do US citizens need a visa for Galápagos Islands?

No, U.S. citizens do not need a visa to visit the Galápagos Islands. You can enter Ecuador with just a valid U.S. passport and receive a tourist stamp on arrival that allows you to stay up to 90 days. However, to visit the Galápagos specifically, you’ll need to purchase a Transit Control Card (TCT) at the airport in mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) and pay the Galápagos National Park entrance fee upon arrival in the islands.
